
PANTHERS INCREASE WIN-STREAK TO EIGHT WITH VICTORY OVER DUQUESNE

PITTSBURGH - The Panthers moved on to an eight-win streak tonight with a three-game sweep over Duquesne. Pitt (8-0, 0-0 Big East) out hit the Dukes (7-4, 0-0 Atlantic 10) by .285 to .131. Pitt's outside hitters pulled through for the team, and three Panthers recorded double-doubles this evening.
"I thought our heads weren't in the match tonight, but that's a lesson they're going to have to learn," said Head Coach Chris Beerman. "I think this team will really raise the level for Friday." He mentioned the team's focus this week would be getting back to some fundamentals before taking on Tennessee on Friday.
Junior Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) finished with 18 kills and 11 digs for a .325 hitting percentage. Sophomore Stephanie Ross (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) recorded 16 kills and 15 digs. Senior Azadeh Boroumand (Red Deer, Alberta/Thurber) had a double-double with 50 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore Jessica Moses (North Olmstead, Ohio/Lutheran West) led the team with six blocks for a two per game average.
The first game began with a rally for the lead with the Panthers pulling ahead at three and staying ahead for the remainder of the game. Pitt gained a comfortable 10-point lead and was able to take the game, 30-20. Andreyko and freshman Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) each recorded five kills while Boroumand put up 18 assists. Moses led the blocking with one solo and one assist.

Duquesne fought back in the second game, taking the lead from the start. Pitt was able to pull ahead, 18-17, and went on a four-point streak. Pitt stayed in the lead winning, 30-26. Andreyko led the team with 10 kills. Ross recorded seven putaways for a .500 hitting percentage. Boroumand finished with 16 kills, and Moses had three block assists. In game three, Duquesne got off to a lead, but two errors by the Dukes tied up the game at nine. The Panthers pulled ahead to a solid lead to finish, 30-23. Ross led the team with five kills, and Boroumand put up 16 assists.
The Panthers will remain home this weekend as they host their annual Pittsburgh Invitational. Pitt's first game will be against No. 12 Tennessee on Friday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m.
NOTES - Kern tied a career high with one assist in this game. Ross tied career highs with three block assists and three total blocks. Pitt tied its best season start since 1987 when the team went on an 8-0 streak before losing to Purdue.
