
PANTHERS DEFEAT AKRON IN FIRST MATCH OF RHODE ISLAND INVITATIONAL

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Panthers got off to a solid start at the Rhode Island Invitational this weekend. Pitt (5-0, 0-0 Big East) defeated Akron (2-2) by a score of 3-1 in their first match of the day. The Panthers out hit their opponents, recording a .348 hitting percentage to Akron's .193.
Leading the team in kills was sophomore Stephanie Ross (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne). Ross recorded 16 kills and had a .387 hitting percentage. Junior Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) put up her fourth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 11 digs, and freshman Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) had 14 putaways.
Senior Azadeh Boroumand (Red Deer, Alberta/Thurber) stayed strong as the team's leading setter with 52 assists. Freshman Kim Kern (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) is quickly becoming one of the team's top middle hitters, having put up five blocks against Akron. Freshman libero Michelle Rossi (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) finished with 16 digs and a career-high three assists.
The Panthers won the first game with a score of 30-20 and the second one by a score of 30-22. The Zips battled back to win the third game 30-28, but Pitt closed out the match with a 30-19 victory.
Pitt will try to remain undefeated as they take on host Rhode Island at 7 p.m. tonight. Tomorrow they'll wrap up the tournament with a 4 p.m. match against Northeastern.
NOTES--Kern set new career highs in kills (seven) and attempts (11). Dooley had one of her best defensive games yet, tying her career highs in block solos (two) and total blocks (five). Sophomore Jessica Moses (North Olmstead, Ohio/Lutheran West) tied her career high with two block solos.
