PITT VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STATE IN SEASON OPENER

OXFORD, Miss. - Led by senior Azadeh Boroumand and freshman Meagan Dooley, Pitt swept Southeast Missouri State, 3-0, in its first game of the season. The Panthers (1-0, 0-0 Big East) matchup against the Redhawks (0-1) is the first in the Magnolia Invitational, a four-game tournament hosted by Ole Miss.
Boroumand (Red Deer, Alberta/Thurber) opened her final season by registering a triple-double with a career-high 11 kills, 35 assists and 12 digs. She additionally led the team with a .733 hitting percentage. Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) led the Panthers with 15 kills in her first collegiate match. She also recorded seven digs and ranked second on the team with a .560 hitting percentage.
In game one, the Panthers outscored the Redhawks, 30-23. The Redhawks were the first to get on the scoreboard with a kill by Jessica Koeper, but the Panthers responded with three points to take the lead. While the rest of the game consisted of both teams rallying for the lead, the Panthers were able to pull ahead at 18 points and win with a kill from Dooley and an assist from Boroumand.
The second game also finished with Pitt winning, 30-23. This time, however, the Panthers gained an early lead of 3-2 and stayed ahead for the remainder of the game. Dooley once again closed out the win with the game point and an assist from Boroumand.
Pitt's final game against the Redhawks was a closer match, as the Panthers won 31-29. The Redhawks controlled most of the game, pulling ahead to a 27-26 lead. Pitt's defense rose to the challenge, blocking a hit and tying the score. Pitt moved into the lead after a tied score at 29 with a kill by junior Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin). The Panthers won the game after an error from the Redhawks' Koeper.
The Panthers are slated to face Arkansas-Little Rock, Western Carolina and Ole Miss in the remainder of the tournament.
NOTES: Andreyko finished the match with 14 kills and a career-high five assists. Also registering career-high marks were Kelly Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison/Pacific) with one assist and six digs and Melissa Ferguson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) with one assist and five digs. The Panthers' three freshmen made their inaugural appearances - middle hitter Dooley, middle hitter Kim Kern (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) and libero Michelle Rossi (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan).
