OXFORD, Miss. - In their second match of the Magnolia Invitational, the Panthers defeated Arkansas-Little Rock, 3-1. Senior Azadeh Boroumand and junior Diana Andreyko led the Panthers (2-0, 0-0 Big East) to their second win of the season in the two-day tournament hosted by Ole Miss.
Boroumand (Red Deer, Alberta/Thurber) earned a double-double after leading the team with 54 assists and scoring on 11 putaways. She also had a career-high three service aces. Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) registered her second double-double of the tournament with 21 kills and 15 digs.
In game one, both teams rallied for the lead with the Trojans (1-1) taking control for most of the first half of the game. The Panthers managed to gain some momentum at 19 points and stayed strong for the remainder of the game. They scored three points to wrap up a 30-24 win.
The Panthers earned an early lead in the second game and never let up. For most of the second half, Pitt maintained at least a 10-point lead over the Trojans. Pitt finished with a 30-19 win after a kill by Andreyko and an assists from Boroumand.
The Trojans were able to take control in the third game, maintaining the lead throughout the entire game en route to a 30-26 victory. A kill from Arkansas-Little Rock's Amila Barakovic secured their win.
Pitt fought back in the fourth game to win by their largest margin this season at 30-13. While the Trojans took the lead in the beginning, the Panthers came back to earn a 17-point lead several times through the game. Two attack errors from the Trojans clinched the Panthers victory.
The Panthers will still face Western Carolina and Ole Miss in Saturday's portion of the tournament.
NOTES: Freshman Kim Kern (Bradenton, Fla/Manatee) led the team with a .556 hitting percentage and eight block assists. Freshman Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) recorded 14 putaways and a career-high 10 digs. Sophomore Jessica Moses (North Olmstead, Ohio/Lutheran West) registered career-highs of 12 kills and 20 attempts. Sophomore Stephanie Ross (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) tied her career-high mark of one solo block.
