PITTSBURGH--Pitt's two runs in the second inning fall short, as the University of Pittsburgh softball team records a 3-2 loss to Providence in the second game of this afternoon's doubleheader at Trees Field. The Panthers slip to 28-25 overall and 9-11 in the conference.

Pitt scored its runs in the second inning when sophomore Valerie Mihalik (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) scored from second, after Providence's first baseman dropped a pass from the short stop on senior Jessica Thomas' (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) groundball. Mihalik earned a lead-off walk.

Later, junior Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) earned a RBI off a double to center when junior Heather Connor (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) scored.

Pitt kept the Friars from scoring in their half of the second inning with a runner at third. After Hellon made a diving catch for the second out, junior Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) struck out the next batter to get out of the inning.

However, Providence took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning after they scored three runs off three hits.

Sophomore Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) was the tying run on third in the bottom of the fifth, but was left stranded. In the sixth inning, junior Morgan Howard (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) was also left at third base.
