UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-Despite coming back from an early 2-0 deficit, the University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped a close 3-2 decision to Penn State in the bottom of the seventh inning at Nittany Lion Field, this afternoon.
The Panthers got on the board in the fifth inning. Junior Heather Connor (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) garnered a RBI when she doubled a shot that sailed over the head of the left fielder, scoring senior Lisa McGregor (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford Senior). McGregor also doubled to left to advance to base. Pitt trailed 2-1 into the sixth inning.
Sophomore Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) scored the tying run in the sixth inning after junior Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) hit a hard shot to the second baseman, who muffled it.
In the bottom of the sixth, Connor ended the inning with a diving catch in front of the plate, on what would have been a great bunt by Penn State.
The Nittany Lions recorded a run off two hits in the seventh for the win. Two RBI singles scored the first two runs for Penn State in the second inning.
Junior Meghan Bostick (Colleysville, Texas/) fanned three batters to get out of the first inning. After retiring the first batter, runners threatened from second and first but Bostick caught the next two batters looking. Bostick (8-12) allowed nine hits, while striking out six batters in the loss.
