ROCK HILL, SC-After holding Winthrop scoreless in the first three innings, the University of Pittsburgh softball team drops a 2-0 decision to the Eagles in game one of its doubleheader. Pitt fell to 5-9 after the loss.
Senior Francesca DiMaria (Pittsburgh, PA/Montour) opened the game with a double to left and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but was unable to pick up another base due to two strikeouts and a caught foul ball.
Pitt had another chance to score and possibly tie the game in the seventh. Junior Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) earned a one-out walk and classmate Joey Scarf (Humble, TX/Humble) singled up the middle to give the Panthers base runners. Unfortunately, the squad didn't get another hit.
Winthrop notched its two runs after earning three hits in the bottom of the fourth. The Eagles' Stephanie Reid earned an RBI on the first run before scoring the second run.
In the bottom of the sixth, junior Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, TX/Grapevine) held off Winthrop after a two-out double threatened another run. Bostick got the next batter to hit a fly ball to center field that was caught by junior Morgan Howard (Wexford, PA/North Alleghany), saving the run.
Despite fanning nine batters in the game, Bostick (2-4) takes the loss for the Panthers, giving up two runs off six hits.
