March 14, 2006

- This past week was a busy one for Pitt Gymnastics. We had a meet on Saturday in North Carolina against UNC, WVU and Univ. of Penn, then a meet on Tuesday at home against WVU and JMU, and then a meet this past Friday in West Virginia against Univ. of California- Berkley and WVU, again! Although it was a long week, we're all pretty disappointed in the way we competed at WVU, but regardless of this we did some good things this week. Here's a little update of the week.

UNC was a fun meet for us. We were able to get out of the area for a little and compete at a school none of us had been to yet. We went into the meet confident and strong, and although we were going up against two nationally ranked teams (UNC and WVU), we still managed to stand out and look impressive. Our beam and bars really came together for us this meet. We are talking a lot about staying aggressive on beam when we compete and it looks like we are getting more comfortable doing so. Cassie set the pace for us on our first event, beam, with a solid routine/score and from there everyone built off of her. Bars was our last event and our best event of the night. We had the highest team score of all the teams on bars and also set a season high team score along with other individual high scores! Nicole and April both set career high scores and Kait scored her season high. Great job girls! Our home meet against WVU and JMU had a lot of continuing season and/or career high scores. A few girls topped their season or career high scores that they got at UNC and we didn't have to count any falls in our final team score. Although our goal was to stay undefeated in the field house, we still were able to post good numbers to help our Regional Qualifying Score which is an important factor as the season comes closer to the end. We are in a good spot as of right now though.

I don't want to capture on our meet at WVU too much, but to keep it simple we definitely weren't the team we can be and that we are. We had a lot of mistakes on bars and beam that kind of came out of nowhere for us and everybody was pretty disappointed. I don't think this is going to be an ongoing thing for us though. We are too consistent in the gym and have proved to be very consistent in our team scores so far, so I think we just need to settle down from the busy week, get into the gym and focus on what we always do. We have our senior night against Penn State this Saturday at 7 p.m., that we need to be ready to go for, so we are throwing the WVU meet out and we plan to pick back up where were left off at UNC and our home meet!
