Softball Falls In Winthrop Invitational Title Game

ROCK HILL, SC--The University of Pittsburgh softball team fell 3-1 to Winthrop in the Winthrop Invitational title game, this afternoon, at Terry Field. The Panthers slip to a 9-11 record on the season following the tournament, while junior Meghan Bostick and sophomore Jessica Dignon were named to the All-Tournament team.

Pitt recorded its lone run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Junior Joey Scarf (Humble. TX/Humble) hit a double to left center field that allowed junior Morgan Howard (Wexford, PA/North Allegheny) to round the bases. Howard advanced to base on a lead-off single.

Winthrop responded with a two-run fourth inning off a single to left center. The eagles added another run in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead.

Bostick (Colleyville, TX/Grapevine) pitched the first five innings of the game, allowing seven hits and striking out five batters in the process. Dignon (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) was 1-3 at bat in the game at garnered two assists in the game.

The Panthers will be back in action on Friday, March 17, in the Buckeye Invitational held in Columbus, Ohio. Pitt faces host Ohio State at 6 p.m.
