Softball Falls To Bethune-Cookman After Late Rally

BOCA RATON, Fla.- Pitt led 3-1 into the sixth inning, but a late three-run rally by Bethune-Cookman holds off the Panthers in their final game of the FAU Worth Tournament, as the Panthers (1-4) dropped a 4-3 decision to the Wildcats (2-3), this afternoon.

The Panthers got on the board first in the second inning, as junior Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, CA/Hiram Johnson West) crossed home following a two-out single up the middle from Leanne McCarron (Norwood, PA/Interboro). Hellon got on base with a single to left field and then stole second.

Later in the third, Bethune-Cookman knotted the score at 1-1 after a wild pitch and passed ball advanced the runner.

Senior Lisa McGregor (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) helped give Pitt the lead back with a double to center field that allowed classmate Francesca DiMaria (Pittsburgh, PA/Montour) to score the first of two runs. McGregor, who made the start at first base, was replaced by sophomore Rebecca Stottlemyer (Charleroi, PA/Home School) in scoring position. Sophomore Jess Dignon's (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) single drove in Stottlemyer to make the score 3-1 after three.

The Wildcats fought back in the sixth inning with three runs off four hits to take the lead and the eventual win.

Junior Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, TX/Grapevine) allowed eight hits and three earned runs in seven innings of action. Bostick struck out four batters in the game and holds a 0-2 record on the season.

Pitt will be back in action next weekend, Feb.24-26, in the Myrtle Beach Chevy Chanticleer Classic held at Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C.
