BOCA RATON, Fla.- The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped its third game of the season this evening with a 8-2 loss to East Carolina. Pitt falls to 0-3 on the year, while ECU improved to 4-0.
In the fourth inning, sophomore Leanne McCarron (Norwood, PA/Interboro) took over on bases for senior Lisa McGregor (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) who was walked on the first at-bat for the Panthers. A one-out sacrifice bunt by center fielder Joey Scarf (Humble,TX/Humble) and a single from Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, CA/Cordova) sent McCarron in for the run.
The Panthers second score was a result of a single from junior Heather Connor (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg) that drove in senior Francesca DiMaria (Pittsburgh, PA/Montour). DiMaria advanced to base on a fielder's choice.
Junior Laura Belardinelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) allowed six earned runs off 12 hits in six innings and falls to 0-2 from the mound.
East Carolina scored four runs off four hits in the third inning and notched its first six scores of the game in the first three. After Erin St. Ledger led-off the third with a single, she advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt. St. Ledger, then, moved to third on a two-out walk that put her and Allison Monce in position to score off a double. Two batters later, a single to center field sent in two more runs.
The Panthers meet Florida Atlantic at 6 p.m. in their fourth game of the tournament.
