PITT VOLLEYBALL DOWNS MARQUETTE IN FIVE-GAME SET

MILWAUKEE - The Pitt volleyball team fought until the end tonight, winning their fourth consecutive conference match. The Panthers (17-6, 6-2 Big East) won 15-13 in game five to defeat Marquette (9-11, 3-6 Big East). Pitt hit .184 and had 12 blocks while the Golden Eagles hit .250 and had 13.5 blocks.
Pitt's outside hitters Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and Stephanie Ross (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) both had double-doubles against the Golden Eagles. Andreyko recorded 20 kills and 13 digs. With a four kills per game average, she had a .333 hitting percentage and contributed 22 points for the Panthers' win. Ross finished with 10 kills and 21 digs. She had four blocks and 16 points against Marquette. Ross tied her career highs with three assists and four block assists. The Panthers third outside hitter, Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West), had 16 kills and 17 points with a .167 hitting percentage.
Setter Azadeh Boroumand (Red Deer, Alberta/Thurber) also had a double-double with 10 kills and 50 assists. She put up 15 points and had six blocks and six digs. Middle hitter Jessica Moses (North Olmstead, Ohio/Lutheran West) had seven blocks and 8.5 points. She additionally recorded five kills.
In game one, both teams rallied for the lead with Marquette pulling ahead, 8-2, after a service ace. The Golden Eagles maintained a solid lead over the Panthers until Pitt tied the score up at 16 with a block from Boroumand and Moses. The Panthers took the lead, 18-16 with a kill from Ross. The game remained close with tied scores throughout until the Golden Eagles moved ahead, 28-25. An error from the Panthers gave Marquette the game one win, 30-25. Marquette hit .300 to the Panthers' .243.
Pitt took control of game two at the beginning though Marquette tied it up at four. A service ace from Dooley gave Pitt an 8-6 lead. Ross and Moses put up a block to give the Panthers a three-point lead at 10. A kill from Andreyko put Pitt up by four, 12-8. Marquette tied the game up at 20, but the Panthers didn't give up control, taking a 28-23 lead. Andreyko's kill set Pitt up for the game point, and another kill by her won game two, 30-25. Pitt hit .311 compared to Marquette's .298.
The Golden Eagles came back in game three, taking an early 5-1 lead. They maintained control of the game, pulling ahead by eight points at 11. With such a strong lead, the Panthers couldn't catch up as Marquette moved ahead, 21-9. A kill gave them the game three win, 30-24. Marquette hit .486 while the Panthers hit .000 with 11 kills and 11 errors.
Pitt wasn't ready to give up just yet, rallying for the lead early in game four. The Panthers moved to 5-3 after two errors from the Golden Eagles. Pitt moved ahead 9-5 with a kill from Dooley. Keeping the momentum, the Panthers took a 10-point lead at 17 points. They kept that lead going at 25 after a kill from Moses. Andreyko had a kill to set Pitt up for the game point, and an attack error from Marquette gave the Panthers the game four win, 30-23. Pitt hit .143 compared to Marquette's .024.
The two teams rallied for control of game five, and Pitt was able to take the lead, 9-5. The Golden Eagles tied the game up at 12, but it wasn't enough for Marquette when a kill from Andreyko won the match for the Panthers and gave Pitt the game five win, 15-13. Pitt hit .263 to Marquette's .095.
The Panthers will now travel to Syracuse for a match on Sunday at 1 p.m. A win over the Orange would give Pitt its fifth consecutive conference win.
NOTES - Monica Macellari (Granger, Ind./S.B. Clay) tied her career high of one assist. Kim Kern (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) tied her career high of three digs.
