Pittsburgh Gymnastics Places Fifth at the NCAA Regionals

DURHAM-The Panthers competed at the Northeast Regional Gymnastics Championships on Saturday evening. Winning the competition was Louisiana State University, scoring 197.125 points. Coming in second place was Oklahoma, scoring a 195.55. These two teams will advance to the NCAA Championships in two weeks. The University of Pittsburgh placed fifth in the competition, scoring 193.1 points.
Leading the team on the vault was Senior, Leila Tait (Naples, Fla./Pittsford Sutherland) tying her career-high score on this event, a 9.775. Tait also led the Panthers on the balance beam where she tied for first place, with a season-high, 9.85 points. She will now advance to the NCAA Championships in two weeks. She is our first NCAA Regional event champion since Samantha Salyers won the uneven bars competition in 1997. Tait is our fourth NCAA Regional champion, joining Salyers (1997-UB), Jeannie Vecchio (1988, 1991-UB), and Babbie Flock (1984-BB). Freshman, Samantha DeBone (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) also placed within the top ten on this event, scoring a 9.8, to help the Panthers.
On the uneven parallel bars, Andrea Arlotta (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) was the highest scoring Panther, recieving a 9.75 from the judges. DeBone and Tait were close behind her, both scoring a 9.725. DeBone also helped the Panthers on the floor exercise with a leading score of 9.8 for the team.
Arlotta also led the team in the all-around competition receiving 38.3. Also competing all-around for the Panthers were freshman Kaitlin Harrison (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) with a 38.2 and Robyn Marszalek (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) with a 38.0.
Tait will be competing in two weeks at the NCAA Championships for her qualification on the balance beam. The meet will take place April 21-23 in Auburn, Ala.
