PITTSBURGH ? The Pittsburgh baseball team defeated LaSalle for the second time on Monday, as they won 9-5. The Panthers are now 5-2 on the year, while LaSalle drops to 0-8.
The Panthers picked up a run early, scoring in the bottom of the first. Jimmy Mayer (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) singled up the middle and advanced to scoring position by stealing both second and third base. Jim Negrych (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis) then lined a RBI single through the right side to score Mayer.
LaSalle answered back in the third as they scored one run to tie the game. They plated the run off a Billy Kern RBI single up the middle, which scored Matt Dunaway.
The Explorers lead was short lived, however, as the Panthers scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Billy Muldowney (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) led off with a walk and then advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt by LaSalle?s starting pitcher, Brandon Geib. Peter Parise (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) was also walked and then advanced to third on a Mike Zambriczki (Newton, Pa./Council Rock) RBI single, which scored Muldowney. Parise later scored on a Sean Conley (Chippewa, Pa./Blackhawk) RBI single up the middle to give Pittsburgh the 3-1 advantage.
Pittsburgh?s offense broke the game open, scoring six more runs in the fifth. Mayer led off with a single, and later advanced to third on a Negrych double. After Dan Ford (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) was intentionally walked to load the bases, Muldowney singled to advance the runners, as Mayer scored. Parise then singled through the right side to score Negrych. Zambriczki kept it going, as he doubled to score both Ford and Muldowney. The Panthers didn?t stop there, as Conley singled through the left side. Conley then advanced to second thanks to a RBI sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of Dan Williams (Berwyn, Pa./Episcopal Academy), to score Zambriczki. After stealing third, Conely scored off a Ben Copeland (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) double to left field, which gave Pittsburgh a 9-1 lead.
LaSalle scored two runs in both the seventh and ninth innings. Phil Marino and John Vincent each scored twice for Explorers. Despite their efforts to answer back, the Panthers went on to win the game 9-5.
Pittsburgh?s starting hurler, Don Rhoten (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) , picks up his first win on the season, giving him a 1-0 record.
LaSalle?s, Geib, suffered the loss on the mound.
