Samantha DeBone Named co-EAGL Rookie of the Week
3/9/2005
PITTSBURGH - Freshman Samantha DeBone competed as an all-arounder for the first time in her collegiate career last weekend and led the Panthers to a tri-meet win over visiting George Washington and Wilson College. For her efforts, DeBone was named the co-EAGL Rookie of the Week with NC State's Kelsey Lee.
DeBone (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) finished third in the all-around with 38.425 points, including a 9.7 on bars to tie for second and a season-high 9.75 to tie for first on the balance beam. DeBone also scored a 9.675 on the floor exercise and added a season-high 9.3 on vault in just her second time competing in that event.
She is the Panthers' first EAGL Rookie of the Week honoree after the league added the weekly award for the 2005 season. She joins sophomore Andrea Arlotta (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) as Pittsburgh gymnasts chosen for weekly awards this season. Arlotta was named the EAGL Gymnast of the Week on February 9.
DeBone continued her improvement last night at West Virginia with season-high scores on all four events and a 39.0 in the all-around to lead the Panthers. Pittsburgh will be at Towson for a quad meet against the host Tigers, Maryland and Rutgers on Saturday, March 12 at 7 p.m.
