Baseball Crushes Kent State, 12-2

PITTSBURGH
Pittsburgh got an early lead by scoring five runs in the first inning. With two outs, both Daniel Ford (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) and Jim Negrych (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis) were hit by a pitch to get on base. Billy Muldowney (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) walked and then Ford and Negrych both scored on a Sean Conley (Chippewa, Pa./Blackhawk) double down the right field line. Jeff Stevens (Danville, Va./Dan River High) then lined a three-run homer over the left field wall, his first of the season., leaving the Panthers with the 5-0 advantage.
Kent State answered back by scoring one run in the top of the second. Greg Rohan, who was walked, scored on Ben Whitney single up the middle.
In the bottom of the second, the Panthers increased their lead to 8-1. Ben Copeland (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) continued his 10-game hitting streak by lining a single to left field. Copeland then stole second and Ford was hit by a pitch to reach first. Negrych then blasted a three-run home run over the center field wall.
Pittsburgh scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The first run came off a Peter Parise (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) sacrifice fly to score Copeland. Negrych then had a solo homer, his second home run of the game, leaving the Panthers with a 10-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Parise added another run by scoring on a throwing error by the third baseman. Pittsburgh then scored one more run in the eighth as Parise scored on a Edgard Sucre (Miami, F.L./Archbishop Carroll) single to the shortstop.
The Golden Flashes were only able to score one more run in the game, giving Pittsburgh the 12-2 win. Kent State?s John Pacella inherits the loss, leaving him with a 2-1 record.
Pittsburgh?s hurler, Robert Brant (Mansfield, Pa./Mansfield High), picked up his first win on the season. Brant pitched seven innings and allowed only three hits and one run. His record is currently 1-1 on the year.
The Panthers travel to St. John?s this weekend for more Big East Action. They play a doubleheader on Saturday with the first pitch set for noon, followed by another game on Sunday starting at noon.
NOTES: Pittsburgh turned a double play in the game...Copeland had two stolen bases...Both teams left six men on base...Kent State had two errors while the Panthers had only one.
