PITTSBURGH
Pittsburgh got an early lead scoring one run in the first inning. Peter Parise (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) started them off with a double down the left field line. Parise advanced to third on a passed ball and eventually scored on a Jim Negrych (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis) sacrifice fly to right.The Panthers scored again in the third inning on a Parise solo homer, his second of the season, leaving Pittsburgh with the 2-0 advantage.
The Panthers? offense broke the game open in the sixth as they scored nine runs off eight hits to give them a 11-0 lead over Niagara. Both Negrych and Billy Muldowney (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) were walked to start off the inning. Negrych then advanced to third on a balk as Muldowney advanced to second. Negrych scored on a Jeff Stevens (Danville, Va./Dan River High) single through the left side. Sean Conley (Chippewa, Pa./Blackhawk) then lined a double to right field scoring Muldowney. Dan Williams (Berwyn, Pa./Episcopal Academy) kept the streak going with a single into right center to score Stevens.Williams then stole second and both Conley and Williams scored on a Justin Cicatello (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore-West) double down the left field line. Cicatello advanced to third as David Cline (Mercersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) grounded out to the first baseman. Parise then had a sacrifice fly to center to score Cicatello. With the bases empty, Daniel Ford (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) kept the Panthers going with a single to right center. He then scored as Negrych homered over the left field wall, his third of the season. Muldowney doubled to left field and Mike Muzeka (Lake Mary, FL/Lake Mary), who pinch ran for Muldowney, scored on a Stevens double to center.
The Panthers scored one last run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Niagara was unable to score any runs and had just two hits in the game. Pittsburgh went on to win it 12-0.
Pittsburgh?s starter Chad Baker (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) picked up his first win of the year giving him a 1-0 overall record. In a total of six innings, Baker allowed just two hits along with one walk and had six strike outs in the game. Niagara?s Ryan Virtue inherits the loss on the mound, his first of the year.
The Panthers play at home again Wednesday March 30, as they take on the Kent State Golden Flashes. The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
NOTES: Both Pittsburgh and Niagara each turned a double play in the game...Cline, Negrych, and Williams each had a stolen base for the Panthers...Niagara left four men on base and Pittsburgh left six.
