Leila Tait Named EAGL Specialist of the Week
3/23/2005
PITTSBURGH?After a season-best performance by senior gymnast Leila Tait, the East Atlantic Gymnastics League has named her the Specialist of the Week. A specialist is a gymnast that competes in no more than three of the four events competed in.
Tait (Naples, Fla./Pittsford Sutherland [N.Y.]) was the Panthers' top scorer in all three of her events at the tri-meet in Gainesville on Friday evening. Her score of 9.75 on the vault was good enough for a fifth-place tie and marked her career-best in the event. She also had season-best scores of 9.825 on the uneven bars and balance beam to place fourth and fifth, respectively.
Additionally, Tait's beam score was the highest by a Pittsburgh gymnast this season. She had missed four of the team's 11 meets this season with an earlier injury but gave Pittsburgh momentum heading into the 10th EAGL Championships, held this Friday at NC State's Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh.
It is Tait's second Specialist of the Week honor after winning her first in January of 2004 and joins former Gymnast of the Week Andrea Arlotta (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) and Rookie of the Week Samantha DeBone (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) as Pitt gymnasts honored by the EAGL this season.
