Eight Panthers Named to EAGL All-Academic Team

PITTSBURGH ? A record-total of 96 student-athletes were named to the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) All-Academic Team, including eight from the University of Pittsburgh, it was announced by the league office. In order to be named to the team, the gymnasts must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher in the previous two semesters. Freshman are also eligible if they earned a GPA of 3.0 of higher in the fall semester.
Named to the EAGL All-Academic Team for the fourth time was senior Sarah Gibson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township). Gibson is one of nine Panthers to earn the honor at least four times. Gibson, a rehabilitation science major, maintained a GPA of 3.42 throughout her senior year, marking the third highest GPA on the team.
Two more of Pittsburgh?s honorees this year have been named to the EAGL All-Academic Team before. Senior Leila Tait (Naples, Fla./Pittsford Sutherland) is being honored for the third time in her career. Tait is a history and communications major and has maintained the highest GPA (3.86) on the team. Sophomore Robyn Marszalek (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) is a two-time honoree. Marszalek is a pre-medicine and anthropology major and has earned a GPA of 3.65, the second highest on the team.
Five other Panthers are first-time EAGL All-Academic Team members. Junior Lindsay Swan (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) is majoring in developmental psychology, earning a 3.03 GPA this past calendar year. Sophomore Jessica Garber (Manheim, Pa./Lancaster County Day School) is also receiving her first honor as an EAGL All-Academic honoree. Garber is a communications major and has maintained a GPA of 3.21.
Three of the eight Panthers being honored for this award are freshmen. Melissa Davidson (New Brighton, Pa./Rochester) is a pre-medicine major with a 3.37 GPA. Samantha DeBone (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) is majoring in health sciences and earned a 3.39 GPA in the fall and Nicole Drane (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) is an undeclared major and earned a 3.09 GPA in her first semester at Pitt.
In the 10-year history of the honor, 42 different Panthers have earned EAGL All-Academic Team plaudits a total of 90 times.
