Baseball Falls to Temple, 5-3, in Series Finale

The Panthers finish up their Florida trip with a game against Lafayette.

PITTSBURGH ? The Pittsburgh baseball team suffered a 5-3 loss to Temple in their series finale on Sunday afternoon in West Palm Beach, Florida. The Panthers drop to 6-5 on the season, while Temple improves to 4-5.
The Panthers picked up an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. Ben Copeland (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) led off by lining a single to right field. Copeland then stole second and advanced to third on an error by the catcher. Jim Mayer (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Copeland. Jim Negrych (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis), after being walked, advanced to third on a Dan Ford (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) single to right. Peter Parise (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) walked and Negrych eventually scored as Sean Conley (Chippewa, Pa./Blackhawk) was also walked to give Pittsburgh the 2-0 advantage.
Temple answered back in the third by scoring one. Mike Silverman scored for the Owls as Tom Dolan grounded out to second.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Panthers scored another run. Negrych, who reached base on a fielder?s choice, later advanced to third on a Parise single down the right field line. Conley then had a RBI sacrifice fly to center, scoring Negrych.
The Owls inherited three more runs in the top of the seventh, giving them a 4-3 lead. Temple plated two of their runs on a multiple RBI single to right center off the bat of Justin Cooper.
The Panthers were unable to score any more runs during the game, while Temple picked up one more in the top of the ninth and went on to win it, 5-3.
Pittsburgh?s Robert Brant (Mansfield Pa./Mansfield High) inherited his first loss of the year in relief of Billy Muldowney (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East).
Temple?s Steve Develin picked up the win giving him a 1-2 record on the season.
NOTES: Pittsburgh had five errors in the game while Temple had two...Parise had two hits for the Panthers...Pittsburgh left nine men on base and Temple left six.
