Gymnastics Takes Second Place in First Quad Meet of Season

PISCATAWAY?The Pittsburgh gymnastics team placed second in their first quad meet of the season on Saturday afternoon at Rutgers. The Panthers scored a 190.050, trailing behind Rutgers with a 190.750. Also competing in the meet were Brown, scoring 186.000 points and SUNY Brockport scoring 183.450 points.
Sophomore Andrea Arlotta (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) led the team with a first place all-around finish. She scored a 38.875, placing in all four events and scoring her season and career highs in the all-around. Arlotta finished in first place on the vault with 9.725 points and also on the bars scoring 9.8 points, her season-best score on the event.
Teammates Brittney Baldwin (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and Samantha DeBone (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) also placed on the uneven bars with career high scores. Baldwin tied for second place, scoring a 9.675 and DeBone tied for sixth place, scoring a 9.575.
On the floor exercise, sophomore Jessica Garber (Manheim, Pa./Lancaster County Day School) tied for third place scoring 9.8 points, her season high score on this event. Also placing on floor for the Panthers were freshman Kaitlin Harrison (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) and Robyn Marszalek (Orland Park, Ill/Carl Sandburg) who both tied for seventh place with a score of 9.75 from the judges.
Freshman Cassie Minick (Potomac, Md./Richard Montgomery) placed second on the balance beam with 9.65 points, her career high. Also placing a career high score and third place on the beam was Marszalek with 9.625 points. Another gymnast placing for the Panthers on the balance beam was Arlotta, tying for fifth place with 9.525 points.
The Panthers (3-4,1-2 EAGL) finished in first place as a team on the floor exercise with 48.775 points and also on the balance beam, scoring 47.8 points. The Panthers will be at Ohio State next week. They will compete on Saturday, February 12 beginning at 7 p.m.
