2/26/2005
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - One big inning came back to haunt the Panthers' softball squad, dropping a 4-3 decision to Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon at the Cougar Classic in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.
Pittsburgh (3-6) got out to a 3-0 lead on with a run in the second inning and two more in the third but four Hokies (14-2) scored in the bottom of the fourth to change the outcome of the game. All four runs were unearned off of Pittsburgh starter Christa Hunter (Sacramento, Calif./Hiram Johnson West), who dropped to 2-3 with the loss. Hunter went the distance, allowing just six hits in six innings and saw her ERA drop to below 2.00 for the season.
The Panthers scored the game's first run on an RBI double by sophomore outfielder Joey Scarf (Humble, Texas/Humble). Scarf went 2-for-3 on the day, leading the Panthers to seven hits off of Virginia Tech pitchers. Pitt made it 3-0 in the third with a two-run single by freshman Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin).
Pittsburgh finished round-robin play with a 2-2 mark at the Cougar Classic, tied right now with Winthrop for second place with one game to play between the host College of Charleston and Iowa State. Virginia Tech clinched the No. 1 seed for the championship round with a 4-0 mark and the Panthers will get the No. 2 seed if Iowa State beats the Cougars. The fourth and fifth seeds will play tonight with the winner playing Virginia Tech tomorrow in the semifinals, while the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds meet in the other semifinal before the winners play for the tournament championship.
