9/29/2004
PITTSBURGH-- The Pittsburgh women?s soccer defeated Providence 1-0 Wednesday at Founders Field. The victory marked the Panthers' first Big East win since defeating Georgetown last season.
Pittsburgh found its rhythm early in the game and had excellent ball movement. Pittsburgh scored its lone goal in the 17th minute when the ball was advanced to Providence?s end. Lisa Schulte sent a ball outside to Rachel Vecchio who beat her defender for a shot. The ball flew into the goal untouched. The score marked Vecchio?s second of the season.
The Panthers continued their good ball movement for the remainder of the first half and sent Providence into halftime trailing 1-0.
The Panthers had numerous runs into the Frairs? end in the second half. Corina Sebesta made a nice run out of the back to pass the ball to Francois. Francois took a nice shot, but Providence?s goalkeeper made the save.
Pittsburgh goalkeeper Jamie Pelusi registered her third shutout of the season.
?It was a very important win," Pittsburgh Head Coach Sue Moy-Chin said. "It was a game I felt we should win, and I?m glad we did. We are trying to get into the Big East tournament; we don?t want to waste any games.?
Pittsburgh is back in action on Friday at Syracuse. The next home game for Pittsburgh is Wednesday, October 6th against West Virginia at 7 p.m.
