PITTSBURGH -- University of Pittsburgh freshman second baseman Jim Negrych has been named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, announced by Collegiate Baseball. Negrych joins Notre Dame?s Jeff Samardzija and Virginia Tech?s Sean O?Brien as the only conference selections on the team.
Negrych (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis), the 2004 Big East Rookie of the Year, led the Panthers to a 38-18 record during the regular season and their first trip to the conference tournament since 2000. A second-team All-Big East selection, Negrych finished among the conference?s leaders in numerous categories and became Pittsburgh?s first freshman all-american.
A starter in 55 of the Panthers? 56 games, he broke the single-season school record for hits (76) and doubles (20) this past year. The team?s top hitter with a .378 batting average, Negrych also led Pittsburgh in on-base percentage (.464), multiple-hit games (22) and walks (33).
