YOUNGSTOWN ? Pittsburgh?s baseball team captured its 37th win of the season as it defeated Youngstown State, 10-3, on Tuesday afternoon. The win improves the Panthers? record to 37-14, which is the second-highest win total in a single-season in school history and the most under head coach Joe Jordano.
Pittsburgh?s Tom Cashman roped an RBI-double in the first inning to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Cashman pushed home Bryan Spamer, who got on base with a one-out walk.
After falling behind 2-1 entering the fifth inning, the Panthers lit up the scoreboard for five runs to take a 6-2 lead that they would not relinquish. In the inning, Jim Negrych, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games, came up with a two-run single while Spamer and P.J. Hiser added RBI-singles. Peter Parise capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
Pittsburgh and the Penguins each tallied one run in the seventh inning before the Panthers closed out the scoring with a three-spot in the eighth inning. Jimmy Mayer laced a two-run double while Alex Rybczak added a run-scoring single in the frame.
Spamer finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs to pace Pittsburgh. Rybczak added two hits and two runs scored and Mayer posted two hits and two RBIs.
Jimmy Blue (3-0) got the win on the mound for the Panthers, while Brian Boone suffered the loss for Youngstown State (18-29).
Pittsburgh closes out its regular-season slate with a crucial three-game series against St. John?s this weekend at Trees Field. With Big East Championship berths on the line, the teams square off for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon and close out the series with a single game on Sunday, also at noon.
