Baseball Drops Game One to Rutgers, 4-0

The Panthers managed just three hits off of Scarlet Knights' starter Jack Egbert.
PISCATAWAY, N.J. ? Pittsburgh?s baseball team dropped the first game of its doubleheader with Rutgers, 4-0, on Thursday afternoon. The loss dropped the Panthers to 17-7 overall and 5-2 in the Big East while the Scarlet Knights improved to 13-13 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
Rutgers got all the runs it would need in the first inning as Rich Canuso had a run-scoring double and later scored on a Johnny Defendis RBI-single.
The Scarlet Knights added another run in the third inning as Jeff Frazier led off the frame with a solo home run. They scored their fourth and final run of the game in the fourth inning as Jeff Grose tallied an RBI-single.
Pittsburgh, who started off the game with back-to-back singles by Ben Copeland and Peter Parise, was held in check for most of the day by Rutgers? hurler Jack Egbert. The Panthers managed just one hit, another Copeland single, the rest of the game. Other than Copeland and Parise, who finished a combined 3-for-5, the rest of Pittsburgh?s lineup ended the game 0-for-16.
Andrew Kuss suffered the loss on the mound for the Panthers, pitching a complete game but giving up 12 hits in six innings. He struck out two batters and walked three.
Egbert (5-1) allowed just three hits and struck out six Pittsburgh hitters on his way to the victory on the mound.
