PITTSBURGH ? For the second straight game, it appeared Pittsburgh?s baseball team was going to mount a comeback to defeat Georgetown. However, the Hoyas held off a late rally by the Panthers and managed to split the doubleheader by taking the nightcap, 2-1, at Trees Field.
Georgetown (22-24, 6-12 Big East) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after four innings by plating one run in both the third and fourth frames.
Pittsburgh?s lone run of the game was a solo home run by Mike Zambriczki in the eighth inning. The Panthers had two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, but could not come through with the clutch base hit.
Erick Chandler kept Pittsburgh in check for most of the day and picked up the win on the mound. Chandler (5-4) worked six innings and struck out seven batters.
Andrew Kuss (3-3) suffered the loss for the Panthers, pitching seven innings and striking out five Hoyas.
P.J. Hiser had two of the four Pittsburgh hits in the game, both doubles.
Pittsburgh (24-10, 8-4 Big East) returns to action on Sunday as it hosts nationally ranked Notre Dame in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Trees Field.
