PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh (16-24, 1-7 Big East) fell to Seton Hall (24-17, 3-3 Big East) 3-0 and 7-4 Friday afternoon at Tress Field.
Seton Hall would score its first two runs in the first game off of solo homeruns by Laura Taylor and Mary Carroll Smith. The Pirates would pick-up their final run of the game in the seventh inning.
Christa Hunter (Sacramento, Calif./Hiram Johnson West) would connect on her third double of the season with just one out in the fourth inning, but the Panthers could not capitalize. At the plate, Pittsburgh recorded four hits.
On the mound, Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) pitched the complete game and allowed 11 hits for three runs, while striking out eight.
In the second game of the afternoon, Seton Hall would take a 2-0 lead in their half of the third inning. Pittsburgh answered back as Beth Gill (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) scored on a wild pitch to close the Pirate lead to just one. Taylor and Lindsay Trottier connected on back-to-back home runs for Seton Hall in the fourth, bringing the score to 4-1.
In the fifth, Seton Hall added one more run, but Pittsburgh would answer back with a two-run sixth inning. Casey Pickard led off the inning with a solo home run for the Panthers. This was Pickard?s third of the season. With the hit, Pickard tied the school record with 117 career hits. Later in the inning, Francesca DiMaria (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) singled, driving in Jen O?Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) from third for the score.
The Pirates would post two more hits in the final inning of play. At the plate, Pittsburgh recorded 11 hits, including two by O?Donnell and Hunter. On the mound, Laura Belardinelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) allowed eight hits for five runs, while striking out four and walking two in 4.1 innings of work. Bostick pitched the final 2.2 innings and allowed three hits for two runs, while striking out three.
Pittsburgh is back in action Sunday when they face St. John?s for a Big East doubleheader beginning a 11 a.m.
