HOMESTEAD, FLA--The University of Pittsburgh baseball team opened the Homestead Challenge with a 14-6 win over Sacred Heart Sunday afternoon at the Homestead Sports Complex.
Redshirt senior pitcher P.J. Hiser (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown CC) kept the Pioneers at bay as he tossed seven strong innings allowing only one hit while striking out four on the afternoon. Hiser earned his first victory of the 2004 season and retired a string of 11 Sacred Heart batters.
The Panthers' offense jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after two innings and finished with a season-high 14 runs in the game. Pittsburgh (3-1) also belted a season-best 15 hits in the contest to hand the loss to Pioneers' starting pitcher Bob McKee.
Sophomore centerfielder Ben Copeland (Bradford, PA/Bradford) led Pittsburgh with a four-for-four performance from the plate including two walks. Copeland also netted two RBIs and recorded a stolen base.
Freshman leftfielder Tony Marciante (Connellsville, PA/Connellsville) belted three hits including a double and a triple.
The Panthers return to action tonight as they take on Evansville at 5:30 p.m.
