Baseball Drops 7-4 Decision to Evansville
3/7/2004
HOMESTEAD, FLA.--The University of Pittsburgh baseball team dropped a tight game under the lights to the University of Evansville by a score of 7-4.
Pittsburgh (3-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning but were unable to hold on to the lead as the Purple Aces chipped away at the Panthers' three-run lead. In the top of sixth, Evansville's offense came to life and put the game out of reach as they climbed on top of Pittsburgh 6-3.
Senior pitcher Nick Evangelista (Shoemakersville, PA/Louisburg College) took his first loss of the season as he pitched 5.2 innings and surrendered four earned runs. Despite the loss, Evangelista struck out nine Evansville hitters and scattered eight hits.
Freshman second baseman Jim Negrych (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) led the Panthers with his first career four-hit game including a double and one RBI.
Sophomore centerfielder Ben Copeland (Bradford, PA/Bradford) continued to hit the ball well as he posted a 2-for-4 performance from the plate. Copeland also added a stolen base and two runs scored for Pittsburgh.
The Panthers return to action on Monday night under the lights when they take on Temple in the third game of the Homestead Challenge. Game time is 7 p.m.
