3/19/2004
PITTSBURGH ? Pittsburgh gymnast Alyse Zeffiro was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Senior Gymnast of the Year, it was announced on Friday evening at the annual EAGL Championships banquet held at the Pittsburgh Hilton.
Tomorrow's EAGL Championships will be held at the Petersen Events Center, beginning at 6 p.m., but the festivities began on Friday with Zeffiro's honor, the first by a Panther. She joins Danielle "Freddie" Alba, who was named EAGL Gymnast of the Year in 1999, and Lisa Fronhofer, who was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2000 as the only yearly award winners in school history.
Zeffiro was also named to the All-EAGL First Team on both the vault and floor exercise and was recognized at the banquet for her two perfect 10.0 scores against West Virginia and James Madison on March 9 at the Fitzgerald Field House. In addition, Zeffiro earned Second Team honors on the balance beam, giving her a total of seven all-league honors in her career -- the second most in school history behind Alba's 11. She has been named All-EAGL on vault three times (two Second Team honors in 2002 and 2003) and has two honors on both the balance beam and floor exercise. Last season, Zeffiro earned First Team honors on the beam and Second Team plaudits on the floor.
Also earning recognition for the Panthers on Friday evening were freshman Andrea Arlotta (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) and senior Diandra O'Connor (Owasso, Okla./Owasso) with Second Team honors on the uneven bars. It was Arlotta's first All-EAGL nomination and O'Connor added a Second Team honor in the all-around for a total of four all-league plaudits in her career.
Senior Erika Goldberg (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) was rewarded for her strong consistent year on floor with an All-EAGL Second Team honor in the event. It was Goldberg's first all-league honor and gave the Panthers a total of seven in 2004, tying the most by Pittsburgh set back in 1999.
Other EAGL Special Awards handed out at the Hilton were the Gymnast of the Year to Courtney Bumpers of North Carolina, Scholar-Athlete of the Year to Marlyn Madey of North Carolina State, and Rookie of the Year to Janae Cox of West Virginia.
