P.J. Hiser Named Big East Player of the Week

PITTSBURGH
Last week, Hiser (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) played in all seven games, starting six as either an outfielder or designated hitter and one on the mound, as the Panthers? finished the week with a 6-1 record. He batted .455 (10 of 22) with two doubles, one triple and two home runs, while driving in eight runs. Hiser finished the week with a .909 slugging percentage and a .538 on-base percentage, stealing five bases in five attempts.
Hiser, who twice earned Big East Pitcher of the Week during the 2002 season, also picked up a victory on the mound in a 6-3 win over Iona. He pitched seven innings and struck out eight batters.
The senior leads the Big East in home runs (four) and slugging percentage (.879). For the year, he is batting .394 with 13 hits and 11 runs scored at the plate. In three appearances on the mound, Hiser is 2-0 with a 1.89 earned run average in 19 innings pitched. He has struck out a team-high 18 batters and opponents are batting a dismal .177 against him.
This marks the third time this season and second in as many weeks that Pittsburgh has garnered honors from the conference. Last week, sophomore outfielder Ben Copeland (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) earned Big East Co-Player of the Week and earlier this year senior pitcher Nick Evangelista (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg) was named Big East Co-Pitcher of the Week.
Pittsburgh (9-3) returns to action this weekend as it hosts Canisius in a three-game series. The first game is set for 4 p.m. on Friday and the series concludes on Saturday afternoon
