Baseball Drops Series Finale 10-3 to New Orleans
2/22/2004
NEW ORLEANS--The Pittsburgh baseball team dropped the final game of the three-game series to New Orleans by a score of 10-3 on Sunday afternoon at Maetsri Field. Despite the loss, the Panthers claimed their first series of the 2004 season.
Pittsburgh's offense posted eight hits on the afternoon, six of which went for extra-bases, but in the end it was not enough as the Panthers could not hold the Privateers' offense in check.
Despite rallying to tie the game at three in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by catcher Mike Zambriczki (Philadelphia, PA/Council Rock) the Panthers could not suppress the New Orleans' offense in the bottom half of the inning. The six-run seventh inning by the Privateers busted a tight game wide open and put the game out of reach for the Panthers.
The five doubles by the Panthers marks a season-high. The homerun hit by Peter Parise (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) in the top of the first inning marked the thrid consecutive game the Panthers' offense has blasted at least one homerun and was Parise's first as a Panther.
Junior Andrew Kuss (Marcellus, NY/Onondaga CC) took the loss in relief of starting pitcher Jeff Barnyak (Sandy Ridge, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) despite holding the New Orleans' offense in check for three innings.
The Panthers return to action on Friday, Feb. 27th as they travel to Duke for a three-game series against the Blue Devils.
