1/31/2004
DURHAM, N.H. ? The Pittsburgh gymnastics team lost a 195.625-193.225 decision to host New Hampshire in an East Atlantic Gymnastics League dual meet on Saturday evening. Despite the loss, senior Alyse Zeffiro broke the individual vault scoring mark and helped the Panthers to a team school record in the event as well.
Zeffiro (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) scored a 9.875 after both senior Erika Goldberg (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) and freshman Andrea Arlotta (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) had tied the old school record with identical scores of 9.85 from the judges. Both Goldberg and Arlotta had career-high scores on the event as did sophomore April Pearson (Jacksonville, Fla./Wolfson) with a 9.8.
The Panthers had a school-record total of 49.075 points on the vault, outscoring the host Wildcats by just 0.075 points in the event. On the uneven bars, Arlotta had a 9.75 and senior Marcy Blitz (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) contributed a strong showing with a 9.8 from the judges. Junior co-captain Leila Tait (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) led the Panthers with a score of 9.825 on the bars, one week after registering a career-best tally of 9.9 at West Virginia.
The beam proved to be the Panthers' (4-2-1, 2-1-1 EAGL) worst event on Saturday evening with just 46.65 points on five routines. Sophomore Roslyn Singleton (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) led the way with a 9.775 and was followed by Zeffiro with a 9.3. The Wildcats had 48.65 points to gain a two-point advantage on that event alone.
On the floor, Zeffiro tied her career-best score of 9.9 for the third time in four meets in 2004. She was followed by Goldberg with a 9.825 and Pearson with a 9.775. The Panthers will return home next Saturday for a quad meet with Rutgers, Cornell and Brown at Fitzgerald Field House. The meet begins at 7 p.m.
