Softball Drops 4-2 Decision to Youngstown State

CANFIELD, Ohio ?The Pittsburgh softball team allowed three first-inning runs to host Youngstown State on Thursday evening and couldn't come back, dropping a 4-2 decision at McCune Park.
Pittsburgh (18-25) actually scored first in the top of the first inning. Freshman Francesca DiMaria (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) led off the game with a double to left field and scored on an RBI double by Kelly Hulpa (Washington, Pa./Trinity) with two outs.
The Penguins (24-11-1) came back with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, two earned off of Pittsburgh starter Nikki Gasti (Carmichaels, Pa./Carmichaels). Pittsburgh cut the lead in half with a run in the third inning. With one out, DiMaria roped a double into left-center field and scored after a single by Casey Pickard (Newhall, Calif./William S. Hart) and an error by YSU third baseman Lacey Reichert.
Youngstown State added a run in the fifth inning and held on for the 4-2 victory. Pittsburgh had a total of five hits, including the two DiMaria doubles, the Hulpa double, and singles by Pickard and Heather Andrews (Zelienople, Pa./Riverside).
Gasti (12-13) pitched six innings, allowing just four hits and three walks with three strikeouts. The Panthers return to conference play on Saturday with a doublheader against Virginia Tech at Trees Field.
