PITTSBURGH -- The National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women announced its All-American Scholar-Athletes for the 2002 season. Six Panther gymnasts earned Academic All-American honors by earning at least a 3.5 grade point average during the 2001-02 school year.
The Panthers' All-American Scholar Athletes are: Jennifer Easter (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney), Rebecca Singleton (Poland, Ohio/Boardman), Marcy Blitz (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), Lisa Yarosh (Seymour, Conn./Seymour), Diandra O'Connor (Owasso, Okla./Owasso) and Jamie Briner (Downers Grove, Ill./Montini Catholic Lombard).
Easter was one of over 50 national gymnasts to have a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Singleton earned a 3.89 GPA, followed by Blitz (3.73), Yarosh (3.71), O'Connor (3.63) and Briner (3.57).
As a team, Pittsburgh had a collective grade point average of 3.124, while Southern Utah had the highest team GPA with 3.78 quality points. All but three of the Panthers' 16 gymnasts in 2002 had GPAs of 3.0 or above, including all but one returner for the 2003 season.
"I am very proud and excited that we continue to be a success in the classroom and in competition," head coach Debbie Yohman said. "The dedication that our gymnasts have shown personifies the ideal student-athlete."
Easter, Singleton, Blitz and O'Connor all earned their second NACGC/W All-American Scholar-Athlete honors while Yarosh and Briner are first-time honorees.
