7/9/2002
PITTSBURGH? Gymnastics head coach Debbie Yohman has announced the hiring of Jared Cassidy as assistant coach for the upcoming 2003 season. Cassidy comes to the Panthers from Yale University, where he served as an assistant coach for the past two seasons.
Cassidy helped the Bulldogs to the 2001 Ivy League title as well as two consecutive second-place finishes in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships. For his efforts, he was named the 2001 ECAC Assistant Coach of the Year.
"I?m very excited about the opportunity to coach at the University of Pittsburgh," Cassidy said. "Things are happening here and the student-athletes at Pittsburgh have an enormous amount of pride. It?s going to be a welcome challenge to help with an athletics program that?s on the rise."
Before his two-year tenure at Yale, Cassidy coached competitors at the 1998 and 1999 Junior Olympic National Championships and was the head coach of a women?s open team at the Empire State Games in New York in 1998 and 2000. He has also coached Level 10 and Elite Level gymnastics club teams on Long Island.
A former Junior Olympic National competitor himself, Cassidy was a silver medalist at the 1992 and 1999 Empire State Games. He earned a bachelor?s degree in forensic psychology from John Jay College in New York City.
"I am pleased with the addition of someone of Jared?s calibre to our staff," Yohman said. "He brings with him not only a highly-qualified technical knowledge of the sport but also a proven ability to recruit at the highest academic levels."
"He has a reputation of having a tremendous rapport with student-athletes and is a quiet but strong motivator. I am excited and looking forward to his help in raising the program to the next level."
