Four Panther Gymnasts Land Six All-EAGL Honors
3/25/2002
PITTSBURGH- Four Panther gymnasts were named to the All-East Atlantic Gymnastics League teams on Friday evening, the night before North Carolina won its first EAGL title and the Panthers finished sixth with their eighth-highest score in team history.
Senior Raya Mullin (Runnemede, N.J./Triton), despite missing the Bowling Green meet on March 16 and the EAGL Championships, earned her second All-EAGL first team honor on the uneven parallel bars. Mullin averaged 9.675 points on her 10 routines with a season-high score of 9.85. Mullin also was named to the second team on the balance beam, where she also earned a season-high score of 9.85 points.
Sophomore Diandra O'Connor (Owasso, Okla./Owasso), competing in her first season as an all-arounder, also had two all-EAGL honors. She was named to the first team on the floor exercise, where she averaged 9.709 points in 11 routines and had a career-high 9.875 against Central Michigan and Ursinus on Feb. 16. She also earned second team honors on the beam where she averaged 9.759 points and scored a 9.925 against Bowling Green on March 16 at Trees Hall.
Two Panthers, junior Nathalie Sulpher (Ottawa, Canada/Franco-Quest) and sophomore Alyse Zeffiro (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem), were named to the All-EAGL second team on the vault. Both gymnasts had a major impact on the Panthers' vault team and led the team to its highest score ever in that event. Sulpher also broke the school record on vault with a 9.85 against Rutgers, James Madison and Wilson College on Feb. 9. It was Sulpher's second consecutive second-team honor on the vault.
Pittsburgh will participate in the NCAA Regionals on April 6 at a place and time to be determined. The Panthers finished in third place in the North East region ahead of EAGL rivals New Hampshire and Rutgers.
