Beerman Announces 2001 Volleyball Signees
5/2/2000
PITTSBURGH - University of Pittsburgh head volleyball coach Chris Beerman has signed four prospects to national letters-of-intent to play for the Panthers this fall.
The four recruits include Abby Fechhelm from Roscoe, Ill., Lindsey Macke from Ft. Thomas, Ky., Gini Ullery from Tracy, Calif., and Melissa Whaley from Ancaster in Ontario, Canada.
"I am excited about how our four incoming recruits will mesh with the players we already have," said Beerman. "Overall, I think this group is extremely competitive and has a great work ethic. They are also strong academically and are just the types of players we are looking for at the University of Pittsburgh."
Abby Fechhelm (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah High) was a three-year starter at Hononegah High. She attended the NIKE High Potential Camp in 1999 and was an All-Star Team selection. Fechhelm also was a member of the Club Sky High 17 Black team, which placed first in the 1999 Nationals Open Division.
"Abby is a very physical and versatile player who I can see playing any one of three positions," Beerman said.
Lindsey Macke (Ft. Thomas, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) was a two-time member of the National All-Tournament Team (1999 and 2000). She was a member of the 10th-ranked Notre Dame Academy varsity team which was the state runner-up in 1999.
"Lindsey is a very fiery and competitive player. She is the definition of a winner," Beerman said. "Lindsey is going to be a great team player for us."
Gini Ullery (Tracy, Calif./Tracy High) earned Stockton Player of the Years honors while competing for the Tracy High squad. She was also a member of the Club Stockton 18 Black team.
"Gini is an outstanding player," Beerman said. "She is very physical and athletic. I predict huge things for her. Gini will have a good opportunity to play as a freshman. She is a clutch player who likes pressure-definitely a Pittsburgh-type player."
Melissa Whaley (Ancaster, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary's Secondary School) is a member of the Hamilton Seekers, one of the most successful club teams in Canada.
"Melissa is going to be a great player for us in the future with her athleticism and quickness," Beerman said. "She will have to adjust to the speed of the game in the United States and the physicality of the play."
