Pittsburgh Falls To No. 19 BC

PITTSBURGH - Boston College used 10 unanswered points early in the second half to pull away from host Pittsburgh and propel the 19th-ranked Eagles to a 66-52 win today at Fitzgerald Field House.
Pittsburgh trailed by two, 28-26, at intermission, but Boston College came out strong in the second half and increased its lead to seven at 18:41. Three straight Panther baskets cut Pittsburgh's deficit to 35-34 with 16:57 remaining. The Eagles, however, went on their decisive 10-0 scoring surge to put the game out of reach. Pittsburgh came within 47-39 at 9:28, but could draw no closer.
Boston College jumped to an 8-2 advantage just over three minutes into the game, but Pittsburgh rallied to tie the score at 10 on a jump shot from freshman Mandy Wittenmyer (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) at 10:59. The Panthers and Eagles battled through the remainder of the half and the two tied the score three more times, including 26-26 with 1:02 to go. Adrianna Spears' layup with 32 seconds remaining gave Boston College the 28-26 halftime lead.
Pittsburgh placed three players in double figures, including junior guard Monique Toney (Yorba Linda, Calif./Cerritos Valley Christian) who had a team-high 11 points. Freshmen Brooke Stewart (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) and Dallas Williams (Mason, Ohio/Mason) each added 10.
The loss drops Pittsburgh's record to 14-10 overall and 5-8 in Big East Conference play.
The Panthers take to the road for their next game. They travel to Villanova Feb. 23, before returning home for their final home game of the season, Saturday, Feb. 26 against Georgetown. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
