PITTSBURGH, Pa. ...The Providence College Friars improved their record to 22-9-1 overall and 7-2-1 in the BIG EAST with a doubleheader sweep at the University of Pittsburgh on Thursday afternoon. Providence won the first game, 7-6, behind outstanding relief pitching from junior Mike Galligan. In the nightcap, junior righthander Rob Corraro went the distance in a game that was stopped in the eighth inning due to heavy rain.
Game One at Pitt's Trees Field was delayed for an hour-and-15 minutes due to rain and started at 1:15 p.m. Pitt took a 6-4 lead through the first three innings against starter Josh Burnham. PC took the lead to stay in the top of the fourth with three runs. Scott Friedholm drove in a run with a ground out and Mike O'Keefe delivered a two-run homer to make it 7-6. After giving up one hit in the bottom of the fourth, Burnham was lifted for Mike Galligan. The 6-5, 225 pound flame thrower shut down Pitt from there giving up just one hit over the final three-and -one-third innings with three strikeouts for his second relief win of the season.
Shortstop Pat Carey led the Friars with two hits and a pair of rbi's. O'Keefe also drove in two runs in the win. Pitt's John Schultz took the loss to fall to 1-5 on the season.
In game two, senior catcher Scott Friedholm staked the Friars to a 2-0 lead with his tenth homer of the season in the top of the first. PC's Rob Corraro struggled through the second inning giving up three single runs but settled down from there. PC added single runs in the the fourth and fifth to go ahead 4-3. Corraro was shutting down the Panthers while Pitt's Kevin Lazeski was doing the same to the Friars until the top of the seventh.
In the seventh, PC scored six times with Pat Carey's three-run homer doing most of the damage. The senior shortstop was 4-8 in the doubleheader for PC with five rbi's on the afternoon. The Friars batted in the eight in a downpour and Pitt was able to get runners to second and third with one out and Todd Murray pitching. At this point the umpires called the game with everything going back to the seventh inning.
Corraro improved to 3-4 on the year while Lazeski fell to 2-2 overall. Friedholm and Carey each drove in three runs in the game. PC is off on Good Friday and then has a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at West Virginia at on Saturday, April 11th.
