Baseball Falls to Duquesne

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh baseball team was defeated by crosstown-rival Duquesne today, 7-2, at Duquesne Field. The Panthers move to 8-8 overall.
Pittsburgh grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman designated hitter Brad Rea (Gibsonia, Pa./North Allegheny) grounded to center field with one man on, scoring sophomore Joe Lydic (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) on the play. In the bottom of the fifth, Pittsburgh shortstop Mike Pokrzywinski (Murraysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) grounded out to second, scoring junior outfielder Erik Katchur (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) to make the score 2-0.
Duquesne's Jamie Pagone scored one run in the sixth before the Dukes took the lead in the seventh with runs by Nick Danzuso and Bernie Weber. Duquesne went on to score four more in the eighth, clinching the win.
Sophomore right-hander Matt Irvin (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) started for the Panthers and allowed only one hit and struck out four batters in five innings pitched. Senior reliever John Schultz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carrick) recorded the loss for Pittsburgh.
The Panthers travel to Ohio University on Wednesday, March 24, before kicking off Big East Conference play, March 27 and 28, at Connecticut and Providence.
