Baseball Defeats Youngstown State, 13-5

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh baseball team set new single-season marks for hits and doubles on its way to defeating Youngstown State today, 13-5, at Trees Field. The Panthers recorded 13 hits on the afternoon, improving their season total to 504 and surpassing the previous mark of 503 set in 1995. They also added three doubles to tally 85 on the year, overtaking the record of 83 held since 1993.
The Penguins got on the board first with a home run in the first inning, but Pittsburgh responded with 12 unanswered runs to lead by 11 after five. Each team scored one in the sixth and Youngstown added three in the eighth for the final score.
Leading the Panthers was sophomore third baseman Joe Lydic (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), who accounted for four RBI on a grand-slam home run in the fourth inning. It was his 12th homer of the year. Lydic finished the afternoon 2-for-5 with one run scored.
Senior first baseman Steve Dickinson (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) also recorded his 12th home run of the season as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Senior second baseman Lou Melucci (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) scored three runs for the Panthers.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Matt Irvin (Derry, Pa./Derry) earned his fifth victory (5-4) as Pittsburgh's starter. He pitched six complete innings and struck out seven batters. Sophomore Greg Paul (Ellwood City, Pa./Riverside) and junior Jory Coughenour (Uniontown, Pa./Uniontown) saw innings in relief.
Pittsburgh moves to 24-25 overall (10-13 Big East Conference). The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, May 11, when they travel to Duquesne for a doubleheader.
