Women's Gymnastics Close Out Regular Seaon with Victory

In its final meet of the season, the University of Pittsburgh women's gymnastics team captured a 193.15-191.025 win over East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL)-rival Towson State. The victory improves Pittsburgh's record to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the EAGL.
Pittsburgh and Towson split the events. The Panthers won the uneven bars and balance beam, while the Tigers took the vault and floor exercise.
Towson finished the vault with a score of 48.275, while Pittsburgh finished with a 47.925. Towson's Kim Yanco won the event with a 9.7, and was followed by teammates Charlotte Andreasen, Niina Parjanen and Pittsburgh's Lisa Fronhofer (Salem, N.Y./Salem) who all tied for second with a score of 9.675.
On the uneven bars, Pittsburgh set a new school record scoring a 48.575, while Towson was second with a 48.075. The Panthers' Samantha Salyers (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) finished first, tying her season-high on bars with a score of 9.85, while teammates Danielle "Freddie" Alba (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and Janet Highhill (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) were second and third, respectively, with season-high scores of 9.8 and 9.775.
The Panthers also finished first on the balance beam with a 48.55 compared to Towson's second-place 46.525. Pittsburgh's Alba finished first in the event, setting a new school record with a 9.9. Towson's Heather Hanson was second with a 9.8 and Panther sophomore Pam Lieberman (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglass) was third with a 9.725.
On the floor exercise, Towson won the event with a 48.15, while Pittsburgh was second with a 48.10. Towson's Hanson finished first with a 9.775 and was followed by teammate Kim Yanco and the Panthers' Colleen Crisi (Woodhaven, Mich./Carlson) and Calli Bodnar (Graytown, Ohio/Oak Harbor), each of whom scored a 9.7 to tie for second. Registering a third-place finish was Pittsburgh senior Joy McElhinny (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) who scored a career-high 9.65.
In the all-around competition, Pittsburgh's Alba finished first with a season-high score of 38.65 and was followed by Towson's Andreasen with a 37.075 and Yanco with a 37.45. Alba's mark of 38.65 moves her into second place on Pittsburgh's all-time top 10 all-around scores list.
Pittsburgh's next action will be Saturday, March 21 when they compete in the EAGL Championships at Rutgers and then at the NCAA East Regionals, April 4 at Fitzgerald Field House.
