PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh gymnastics team traveled to East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) foe Rutgers this week to compete in a quad-meet with Bridgeport and Ursinus and returned home with a 3-0 record, defeating all of its opponents with a team score of 192.100.
Junior Danielle "Freddie" Alba (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) had another record-setting performance, breaking her own all-around record for the second time in as many weeks. She scored a 39.40 claiming first place finishes in every event except the uneven parallel bars, where she finished second as she tied the school record with a career-high 9.925 before teammate Samantha Salyers (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) set a new mark with a 9.950 shortly after. Alba also set a school record on the balance beam with a 9.925 and scored a 9.675 on vault and a 9.875 on floor exercise.
Pittsburgh swept the top four spots on bars while setting a school record with a team score of 49.025. Salyers and Alba led the way in the scoring. Senior all-arounder Janet Highhill (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) scored a career-high 9.90 to finish third, while freshman Rebecca Singleton (Poland, Ohio/Boardman) placed fourth with a 9.850. Highhill also claimed third in the all-around with a 37.875.
Junior Lisa Fronhofer (Salem, N.Y./Salem) placed second (tied) on the vault with a 9.650 and fourth on beam and floor with a 9.725 and 9.775, respectively.
The Panthers return to action Thursday, Feb. 18 when they host a tri-meet competition with EAGL opponent North Carolina State and Ursinus in Trees Gym (7 p.m.).
EAGL HONORS: Junior Danielle "Freddie" Alba was named the EAGL Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 9. Alba led Pittsburgh to a season-high 193.075 score and set school records in the all-around and floor exercise in the Panthers' loss at Rhode Island on Feb. 7. Her 39.125 all-around score shattered her previous school record of 38.95. Alba tied for second on floor with a 9.90, briefly setting the school record that was broken by teammate Lisa Fronhofer moments later. She also scored a 9.65 on vault, a 9.775 on bars and a 9.80 on beam, as she tied for second on both beam and floor.
