Gymnastics Takes Second in Quad-Meet

The Pittsburgh gymnastics team placed second in quad-meet competition at West Virginia on Jan. 30. With a team score of 191.325, the Panthers defeated Towson (190.350) and Temple (184.600), but fell to defending East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) champion West Virginia (195.375).
Leading Pittsburgh in the all-around were junior Danielle Alba (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and senior co-captain Janet Highhill (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) who placed second and third, respectively. Alba, the Panthers' all-around record holder, scored a 38.750 for the second time in her career which ranks third on the all-time top 10 list. Her all-around performance was highlighted by a sixth-place finish on vault (9.775) and a fifth- place finish on the uneven bars (9.80).
Highhill had a career performance, scoring a 38.625 in the all-around and placing her eighth on the all-time top 10 list. She scored career-highs on vault (9.625) and beam (9.700) and tied for fifth on the floor exercise with a 9.650.
Junior Samantha Salyers (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) continued her outstanding uneven bars performance, claiming first place on the event with a score of 9.875, while junior Lisa Fronhofer tied for third on floor with a 9.725.
Pittsburgh moves to 2-2 overall, 1-2 in EAGL competition. The Panthers return to action when they travel to Rhode Island on Feb. 7.
