Gymnastics Lose to Rhode Island

PITTSBURGH - It was a record-breaking weekend for the Pittsburgh gymnastics team as they lost a close decision to Rhode Island with a team score of 193.50-193.075. The Panthers claimed the uneven bars and floor exercise with school-record scores of 49.00 and 49.225 on their way to recording the third-highest team score in school history.
Juniors Danielle "Freddie" Alba (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and Lisa Fronhofer (Salem, N.Y./Salem Central) led Pittsburgh, setting new school records in the all- around and floor exercise with scores of 39.125 and 9.925, respectively. Alba's all-around score broke her previous record of 38.95 and included a 9.90 on floor which also surpassed the previous record prior to Fronhofer's performance. Alba recorded a 9.650 on vault, a 9.775 on the uneven bars and a 9.80 on the balance beam. Fronhofer, also the school's recordholder on vault, led the team on that event with a 9.725.
Junior Samantha Salyers (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West), currently ranked third in the country on the uneven bars, scored a 9.90 on the event for the second time this season while senior Janet Highhill (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) placed second in the all-around with a 38.70.
The Panthers will travel to East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) rival Rutgers on Saturday, Feb. 13 to compete in quad-meet competition with Bridgeport and Ursinus.
