Gymnastics Competes in NCAA Region 5 Championships

PITTSBURGH - Paul Scardina was honored as an Assistant Coach of the Year, as the gymnastics team competed in the NCAA Region 5 Championships hosted by Penn State on April 10. The Panthers placed fourth with a score of 191.50 behind Penn State (196.325), Arizona State (195.10) and New Hampshire (192.525). Massachusetts (190.275) and Rhode Island (187.75) rounded out the field. Pittsburgh completed its season with an overall record of 12-15, and 4-9 in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League.
Scardina received the Region 5 honor in only his first season at Pittsburgh. He shares the award with Tom Miller, assistant coach of Brown. This is Scardina's third time as a coach of the year honoree during his coaching career. He has been recognized as an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Assistant Coach of the Year at Yale, and as the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (Division III) and Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WWIAC) Head Coach of the Year at Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Junior Danielle "Freddie" Alba (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) led Pittsburgh in the competition with a fifth-place finish in the all-around. She recorded a 38.80 with scores of 9.65 on vault, 9.70 on the uneven bars, 9.750 on balance beam and 9.70 on floor exercise.
Junior Lisa Fronhofer (Salem, N.Y./Salem) claimed a seventh-place spot on vault with a season-high 9.75. She also finised 10th on floor, scoring a 9.725. Sophomore Colleen Crisi (Woodhaven, Mich./Carlson), who was only competing for the fifth time this season, stepped up for the Panthers and claimed 11th place on beam, with a 9.725. Rebecca Singleton (Poland, Ohio/Boardman) completed a standout freshman campaign with a 14th-place finish on bars with a 9.725.
