The Pittsburgh Panther women's soccer team saw its four-game winning streak snapped with two shutout losses in non-conference action this week. The Panthers fell to the United States Air Force Academy, 2-0, on Sept. 25 in a tournament hosted by the Falcons. Air Force out-shot Pittsburgh 24-6. Becky Wyfells and Jennie Schoeck scored goals for the Falcons. Panther goalkeeper Nicole Bashor (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) recorded 11 saves on the day.
Pittsburgh was also defeated by Wyoming, 2-0, in the USAFA tournament on Sept. 27. Both goals for the Cowgirls came in the second half, the first by Katrina Morton 57:26 into the match. Erica Campbell followed with a goal at 65:15, clinching the win for Wyoming. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Stout (Dayton, N.J./South Brunswick) made her second start of the year for the Panthers and recorded six saves.
Pittsburgh is 5-4 overall and remain at 4-1 in the Big East, placing them in third place in the conference behind nationally ranked Connecticut and Notre Dame. The Panthers begin a four- game homestand on Friday, Oct. 2 when they host conference foe Boston College at 7:30 p.m. at Pitt Stadium. Pittsburgh then takes on Providence on Sunday, Oct. 4 at Sewickley Academy's Nickles Field. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Big East Honors: Panther forward Brigid Handforth (Downington, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) was named Big East Rookie of the Week for her efforts against conference opponents Villanova and Rutgers the week of Sept. 20. Handforth recorded seven points on the week as she had a hand in every goal for Pittsburgh. She scored the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Villanova. In the Panthers' 3-2 win over Rutgers, Handforth scored two goals and assisted on the third score.
