Women's Soccer Defeats Rutgers, 3-2

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Panther women's soccer team won their fourth- straight game of the season today as they defeated Rutgers University, 3-2, in a Big East Conference matchup at Nichols Field on the campus of Sewickley Academy. With three goals on the day, Pittsburgh set an all-time team record with a total of 23 goals scored in a season.
Freshman midfielder Brigid Handforth (Downington, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and sophomore Charity McClure (Ashville. N.C./Ashville) teamed up on all three goals for the Panthers. Handforth set the pace for Pittsburgh just 1:42 into the game with the assist by McClure. Then Handforth returned the favor by assisting McClure's game-winning goal five minutes later.
Junior Uchenna Bright scored both goals for the Scarlet Knights, her first coming at 26:16 into game, making the score 2-1 at the half. Handforth netted her second goal from a McClure set-up 66:50 into the contest. Bright scored the last goal for Rutgers with the assist by Alyssa Radu at 70:27.
Handforth has scored three goals for the Panthers in just her first two games of the season, while McClure leads the team with 19 points on six goals and seven assists.
The Panthers increase their record to 5-2-0 overall, 4-1-0 in the Big East. Rutgers falls to 1-5-1 overall, 1-2-1 in conference play.
Pittsburgh returns to action when the Panthers travel to Colorado Springs to take part in the USAFA Tournament on Friday, Sept. 25.
